What Makes Coffee So Healthful?

January 29th, 2010 by Jeffrey Bell No comments »

So what is it in coffee that provides such remarkable benefits? First, that cup of java is a terrific source of protective antioxidants. Researchers evaluating both the antioxidants levels of various foods and drinks and the frequency with which those items are consumed have found that the average amount of coffee consumed by North American adults per day- 1.64 cups- provides 1,299 mg of antioxidants. Tea, the second richest source, supplied only 294 mg, followed by antioxidant-rich (but sparingly eaten) fruits and vegetables, which provide fewer than 75 mg each of antioxidants per day. Believe it or not, coffee even contains fiber- nearly 2 g per cup.

But these aren’t the only components that make coffee a health food. Although some studies reveal that regular and decaffeinated coffee both have benefits, oft-maligned caffeine gives the drink much of its oomph. In addition to perking up the nervous system, caffeine increases the activity of the neurotransmitter dopamine and enhances delivery of nutrients and oxygen to the muscles and brain.

So, the next time you feel like a cup of Joe, indulge yourself. It’s a good way to boost your mood, your energy, and your overall health.

Not Feeling a 100% Today?

January 22nd, 2010 by Jeffrey Bell No comments »

Here are some tips on how to make yourself feel better when you’re depressed:

1. Calm down

Before anything else, calm yourself down. Don’t panic. Close your eyes and take a deep breath.

2. Feed your mind with positive thoughts

When you’re depressed, it’s easy to fall into a vicious cycle of negative thoughts. It’s important that you break this cycle.  To do that, feed your mind with positive thoughts. You may read spiritual texts, motivational books, or inspiring quotes. You may also listen to positive tapes.

3. Remember good things

Direct your mind to the positive. Remember the good things in your life. Remember the good people around you.

4. Look at the big picture

An event that seems bad might not seem that bad if you look at the big picture. Put the event in context.

5. Believe that everything will be all right

What you believe has a big effect on you. If you believe that things will go wrong, that would usually be the case. On the other hand, if you believe that everything will be all right, you will have a winning attitude.

6. Exercise

When you’re depressed, take time to exercise.  Exercise relieves the symptoms of depression and anxiety.

7. Forgive

Sometimes one reason you feel bad is because you don’t forgive. Perhaps you had made mistakes in the past and you blamed yourself for it. You need to forgive yourself. Or perhaps someone mistreated you. You need to forgive them.

8. Take action

Things won’t get better if you just sit and do nothing. Instead of thinking about how bad things are, think of what you can do to solve the problem and take action.

9. Say something positive

Negative words have devastating effect on your confidence and motivation. So whenever you’re about to say something negative, stop yourself and take a deep breath. Reframe what you’re going to say and make it positive.

10. Think about other people

One of the best ways to make yourself feel better is simply by taking the focus away from yourself.  Start thinking about other people and how you can help them. When you do that, your problems will no longer seem so hard.

Count Those Calories Accurately

January 20th, 2010 by Jeffrey Bell No comments »

We know it’s an ongoing battle to keep an eye on exactly what we are putting into our bodies. According to a new study, prepared foods may contain an average of 8 percent more calories than their package labels show and restaurant meals may contain a whopping 18 percent more. And as far as the FDA is concerned, that’s not even considered a problem.

Researchers looked at 29 restaurants and 10 frozen-food products, taking care to select foods apparently low-calorie that dieters would be likely to choose.

Over the course of a year, consuming just 5 percent more calories than you need in a 2,000-calorie diet can mean a 10 pound weight gain.

Fitness Levels of Canadians

January 18th, 2010 by Jeffrey Bell No comments »

Previous assessments of fitness levels of Canadians over the past two decades have relied almost exclusively on the body mass index (BMI), which has shown that Canadian adults have become heavier over the past 25 years. The survey’s authors argue that a variety of other measures are required to gain a more complete understanding of fitness levels associated with current and future risk of disease.

The CHMS, the most comprehensive national survey ever conducted in Canada to determine fitness levels, captured key information relevant to the health of Canadians by means of direct physical measurements, such as body measurements, cardio-respiratory fitness, musculoskeletal fitness and blood pressure. Here are some of the survey’s key findings:

  • Fitness levels of children and youth have declined significantly since 1981, regardless of age or sex.
  • Fitness levels of adults have also declined, particularly among younger adults.
  • Among youth aged 15 to 19, the percentage whose waist circumference put them at an increased or  high risk of health problems more than tripled.
  • Among adults, decreases in fitness levels over the same period were particularly pronounced for young adults aged 20 to 39. Within this group, the percentage with a waist circumference that placed them at a high risk for health problems more than quadrupled. The proportions went from 5% to 21% among  men, and from 6% to 31% among women.
  • Roughly 3% of the adult population had high blood pressure that was undiagnosed in 2009.
  • Among teen boys in the age group 15 to 19, the proportion classified as overweight or obese rose from  14% to 31% between 1981 and 2009.
  • Among teen girls, it increased from 14% to 25%.
  • Among both teen boys and girls, the proportion in the waist circumference category who were at high  or increased risk of health problems more than tripled
  • At the age of 40 to 69, the percentage of males and females whose waist circumference placed them at  a high risk for health problems more than doubled between 1981 and 2009.

The percentage whose body composition was classified as “fair/needs improvement” rose fourfold  among young adult men, from 5% to 20%, and sevenfold among young adult women, from 4% to 29%. (Body composition includes the BMI, waist circumference and skin-fold measurements.) The indicators were collected between March 2007 and February 2009, on a representative sample of  about 5,600 Canadians aged 6 to 79 years at 15 mobile examination trailers across the country.

The survey used a mobile examination centre, staffed by health professionals to collect the physical measures  of health. Info: www.statcan.gc.ca

10 Ways to Add Value to Others

January 13th, 2010 by Jeffrey Bell No comments »

Time to shift gears for a moment …  Here are ten behaviours we can all put effort into, to pass on the abundance mentality and influence the people we encounter in our daily lives.

  1. Tip generously: Leaving as large a tip as you can afford not only puts a little extra money in your servers’ pocket, it tells them that they’re appreciated.
  2. Compliment someone: Be honest and sincere. Don’t expect anything in return.
  3. Be totally open with someone: Let someone know exactly how you feel about something; letting someone into your confidence can be a great way to show your trust and appreciation of them.
  4. Give someone a book you’ve read: Making a gift of something you’ve read and enjoyed is more than just a nice gesture, it’s a way of showing someone that you think of them, you understand them, and you want to share something with them.
  5. Make something for someone: Give without expectations — whether they return the favor or not, whether they like it or not, whether they’re nice to you or not, these are all irrelevant.
  6. Send a letter, email, tweet, or text message out of the blue: Maybe they’ll respond, maybe not — it’s beside the point. They just need to know that they’re important to you.
  7. Commend an employee to their manager: It’s one thing to tip or compliment someone for their service, it’s another to contact their manager and tell them what a great job they’ve done.
  8. Teach someone how to do something: Share your skill or talent with someone. Have patience and respect; you’re giving them a gift, not compensating for some lack in their character.
  9. Let someone shine: Put a spotlight on someone else’s talents by letting them take over a presentation, deferring to their wisdom, or asking their advice.
  10. Connect like minds: Introduce two friends or colleagues who you feel have something to gain from each other.Compliments of Lifehack

Your Fat Cells’ Messages

January 11th, 2010 by Jeffrey Bell No comments »

Contrary to the popular belief that fat cells should be banished, they are an active and intelligent part of your body, producing hormones that impact your brain, liver, immune system and even your ability to reproduce.

What’s more, the hormones your fat cells produce impact how much you eat and how much fat you burn.

One of these hormones is leptin, which sends signals that reduce hunger, increase fat burning and reduce fat storage.

That is, if your cells are communicating properly and can “hear” this message.

If you eat a diet that is high in sugar and grains, the sugar gets metabolized to fat (and is stored as fat in your fat cells), which in turn releases surges in leptin. Over time, if your body is exposed to too much leptin, it will become resistant to it (just as your body can become resistant to insulin).

And when you become leptin-resistant, your body can no longer hear the messages telling it to stop eating and burn fat — so it remains hungry and stores more fat.

Leptin-resistance also causes an increase in visceral fat, sending you on a vicious cycle of hunger, fat storage and an increased risk of heart disease, diabetes, metabolic syndrome and more.
